Characteristics of a True and Sincere Worshipper who can Influence the World

(Delivered by Roli S. Arangote during Praise & Worship Explosion at Nabas Public Market Plaza;
March 29, 2009)

Text: Deuteronomy 11:13-20
13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul- 14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.
16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will shut the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the LORD is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, (NIV)
• Know the true God
• Worship God with all your everything
• Then God will shower you the rain of blessings
• Never turn your back from God because He will not only stop the blessings but He will release His wrath upon you

The Purpose of the Church

Ephesians 3:10 10His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, (NIV)
Matthew 5:13 – We are the salt of the world
Matthew 5:14 – We are the light of the world

Goal
- To be a true and sincere worshipper of God to influence the world and change the world for God’s purpose and glory
- When you make a step and be a true and sincere worshipper of our true God, God will just bring the result, a mighty result, a notable achievement

CHARACTERISTICS OF A TRUE AND SINCERE WORSHIPPER WHO CAN INFLUENCE THE WORLD
(Worship in singing, giving, sharing Jesus, witnessing, following God’s Word, and doing everything for God in His direction and His will)

1. UNASHAMED
David was unashamed to dance before the Lord
• 2 Samuel 6:21-22 21 David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD's people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor." (NIV)
Result: 2 Samuel 8:14b The Lord gave David victory wherever he went

2. UNAFRAID

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were unafraid to disobey the king’s decree to worship the golden image even it would cost their lives
• Daniel 3:17-18 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." (NIV)
Result: King Nebuchadnezzar issued a decree to all people of any nation to respect the true God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Even the king was changed to respect the true God)
• Daniel 3:28-29 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way." (NIV)
• Daniel 3:30 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were promoted

Daniel continued to show his true and consistent worship to the true God and was unafraid to disobey the king’s decree to worship only King Darius even it would cost his life
• Daniel 6:10 10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. (NIV)
Result: King Darius issued a decree to all his kingdom to fear and respect the true God of Daniel
• Daniel 6:26-27 26 "I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.
"For he is the living God
and he endures forever;
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.
27 He rescues and he saves;
he performs signs and wonders
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions." (NIV)
• Daniel 6:28 Daniel was prospered

3. UNDIVIDED HEART

Abraham worshipped the true God with undivided heart even it would cost him his only beloved son Isaac
• God tested Abraham in Genesis 22:2 - Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." (NIV)
• Abraham followed God immediately without question because of his undivided heart
• Gen 22:3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. (NIV)
• Genesis 22:9-12 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!"
"Here I am," he replied. 12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." (NIV)
Result: God blessed Abraham
• Genesis 22: 15-18 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring [b] all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." (NIV)

4. UNSHAKEN

Elisha stood in the side of God and was never shaken even there were strong forces of enemy’s horses and chariots surrounded him
• The king of Aram ordered to capture Elisha
• 2 Kings 6:13-14 13 "Go, find out where he is," the king ordered, "so I can send men and capture him." The report came back: "He is in Dothan." 14 Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. (NIV)
• Elisha’s reaction: 2 Kings 6:16 16 "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." (NIV)
• Result: 2 Kings 6:17-18 17 And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike these people with blindness." So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked. (NIV)
• God is bigger than our problems

Nehemiah stood with God and continued in building the wall of Jerusalem and he was never shaken by any opposition
Opposition: Nehemiah 4:7-8 7 But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem's walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. 8 They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. (NIV)
Nehemiah’s response: Nehemiah 4:9,14,20 – 9 But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat. 14 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!" (NIV)
Result: Nehemiah 6:15 The wall was completed in 52 days
• Nehemiah 6:16 16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God. (NIV)

5. UNSTOPPABLE

Joshua
God’s promise to Joshua: Joshua 1:3,5 – 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
God’s instruction: Joshua 1:8 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
• When God told Joshua to cross the Jordan River, Joshua followed the instruction. Even the river was flooded, when the Levites step onto it, the water stopped and they cross-over.
• Your trust in God by following His Word makes you unstoppable

Peter and John
• Peter and John were seized and put into prison and were told to stop speaking or teaching about Jesus (Acts 4:17-18 17But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name." 18Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. NIV)
• Peter and John’s response in Acts 4:19-20 – 19But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
• No one could stop Peter and John in telling about Jesus

Macedonian Churches
• The churches in Macedonia, - poverty could not stop them in giving for God’s glory
• 2 Cor. 8:1-3 – 1And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. (NIV)

Conclusion

When you stand for God, God will stand for you! Change the world by your faith. Influence the world by your action and your lifestyle. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them. Greater is our God that is in us than anything and anyone in this world. Just live by faith in Christ and die for it, if necessary. You will still live again with Christ in eternity.

Being a true and sincere worshipper of God is not just doing what you want to do for God, but doing what God wants you to do for Him. Sacrifice without obedience is nothing. But sacrifice with obedience in God is influencing. Serve God not at your will but in God’s will.

Philippians 1:20,21 20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. (NIV)

Challenge to Live as Disciple of Jesus

John 6:62-69

"What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one come to me unless the Father has enabled him." 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

Challenge of Jesus

"You do not want to leave too, do you?"

Cash of following

· Will you follow God if He will bless you?

· Prosper you?

· Give what you desire?

· Answer your prayer?

· Heal your sickness?

Cost of following

· Will you still follow if you suffer for Him?

· The world will hate you?

· Your family will hate you?

· Everything will be taken from you?

God has promised to bless us but He did not promise that we won't experience hardship

· Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

· Philippians 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him.

· 2 Timothy 2:3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus

Response to the challenge

Choice to Follow

· Following God is a choice not an option

· A choice means it is your decision that comes from a willing heart

· Joshua 24:15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will the Lord."

Certainty of Choice

· Following God should be certain because of the choice we made

· We know the consequences but we are certain of our decision

· Job 1:21 ..."Naked I came from my mothers womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.

· Job 2:9, 10 His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10 He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?"

Commitment to Follow

· God needs our commitment to follow him in spite of everything

· Our commitment is to follow Him regardless of cash and cost

· Daniel 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

Crown in heaven

· Our reward is in heaven

· Eternal life is to those who follow God until the end.

Conclusion

Follow God not because of the blessings from Him. Follow God not also because of the sufferings for Him. But follow God because it is your choice to obey Him. You will have the blessings and also sufferings here on earth. But the important is you have the eternal life with Jesus in heaven.

Growth: Start Planting for God's Purpose

1 Cor. 3:6-7 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

- God makes things grow but first we need to plant (do something) and water (care) it.

- If you want result you need to act

Biblical examples

Abraham

- Blessings (Result) – Obedience (Action based on faith)

Peter

- Large number of fish (Result) – Obedience (Action based on faith)

Widow of Zarephat

- Daily provision (Result) – Obedience (Action based on faith)

Nehemiah

- Wall of Jerusalem rebuilt in 52 days (result) – hard work (action base on faith)

Therefore Faith + Action = Result

Growth in the Church (growth in all aspect)

Acts 9:31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit; it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

- peace – strengthening – encouragement – growth

- growth is the will of God

- when God’s people is growing, God’s kingdom is growing also

- growth in God’s kingdom is the result of healthy church

- when God’s kingdom is growing, church will be blessed abundantly

Three Areas God will use for Growth

1. Growth within ourselves

- personal relationship with God (respect and honor)

- personal growth is the will of God, just allow Him

- ACTION: Matt. 22:37-38 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. (NIV)

- Rom 13:12-14 12The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. (NIV)

- 2Peter 1:5-9 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. (NIV)

2. Growth within the family of believers

- it is the will of God to make us grow in all aspects – spiritually, economically, emotionally, mentally, and physically

- Acts 9:31 31Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

- It says that growth is just a result if we have peace

- NEED for growth: peace within

- HOW: a) right relationship with one another

- Matt. 22:39 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.’

- This is what we need to plant - Phil. 2:1-4 1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (NIV)

- HOW: b) Prosperity of believers

- Source: Phil. 4:19 19And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (NIV) (God is rich)

- Purpose: 2 Cor. 9:11 11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

- ACTION 1) Be generous – 2 Cor. 9:11

- Biblical example 2 Cor. 8:1-3 1And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.

- ACTION 2) Give your whole tithes and offering faithfully

- Mal. 3:8-10 8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.
"But you ask, 'How do we rob you?'
"In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

- ACTION 3) Give importance to the house of God

- Haggai 1:5-10 5 Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it." 7 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says the LORD. 9 "You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.

- God will prosper the works of your hand if you do it for God’s glory

- When you prosper, remember God

- Deuteronomy 8:17-18 17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

3. Growth through the family of believers through evangelism

- We need to go outside, seek and save the lost, bring them inside, train them also to seek and save the lost

- Luke 19:10 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

- NEED: support and involvement, money (resources), manpower, moment (time), machine (tools and equipment)

- Matt. 6:33 – But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Food, clothing, shelter, all our needs)

- If your desire is to do the will of God to expand His kingdom, He will prosper you and make you an instrument for this expansion.

- You are a channel, not a storage

Conclusion

If you want growth for the church, for your family, and for yourself, do your part – PLANT and WATER for God’s purpose, then God will do His part – GROWTH.

God's WAY in Bringing Justice

1 Peter 3:8-12

8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.

9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so may you inherit a blessing.

10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.

11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

  • Somebody may not be treating you right
  • There are some who are telling lies about you trying to ruin your reputation
  • Maybe you were cheated in a business deal and you lost lot of money
  • Or maybe somebody is telling lie about you and it hinders your promotion
  • And because of these things, you want them to pay you back
  • You want to take revenge
  • But Jesus is telling us right now, "Remember what people did to me. I was beaten. I was insulted. I was crucified. I suffered at the cross because of your sins. But I never fought back."
  • If you want to live your best life now, learn to trust God to bring justice in your life.
  • Let God bring you justice in His own way, not our way.
  • God's way is far better than our way.

God's WAY in bringing justice

W - Work to please God

  • Whatever is your work today, a teacher, driver, farmer, businessman, housekeeper, or even student, work for God to please Him, not for men.
  • Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Crist you are serving.
  • Story of a man who worked as a mechanic at a large diesel-truck shop. For many years he was not treated properly at his work. His coworkers often made fun of him because he wouldn't go out and party with them after work. He was one of the best mechanics on staff and consistently one of their top producers. But for 7 years, he never received a pay raise, he didn't even get a bonus, he didn't get any sort of increase - because his supervisor didn't like him. But he continued his best. He worked hard and kept his mouth shut. He said he was not working to please his supervisor; but he was working to please God. One day, the owner of the company called him. The owner wasn't involved in the day-to-day operations, so the mechanic had never met him before. But the owner said he was ready to retire, and he was looking somebody to take over the business. "I'd like you to have it," the owner said to the mechanic. But the mechanic said, "I'd would love to have it, but I don't have enough money to buy your business." The owner replied, "You don't need the money. I have money. I'm looking for somebody to take over the business. I'm looking for someone I can trust to continue the work I have started. I want to give it to you." Today, the mechanic owns the company free and clear.
  • God will do the same thing for us if we just work to please Him.

A - Avenge is of God

  • Because of human emotion, normally, we react in every situation
  • Every bad things others had brought us, we get mad and we want to get even
  • We want to take revenge
  • Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.
  • Story of Joel Olsten and his wife Victoria. There is a person in their lives who cheated them a lot of money in a business deal. But they forced themselves to do the right thing, even difficult, and turned over the matter to God. This process continued for several years but they didn't see any change. But they keep reminding themselves that God is a God of justice. One day, God supernaturally stepped in and turned that situation around. The man who cheated them lost his family, his business, his reputation, and everything. Y - Yield Christ's humility, forgiveness, and love in your life

  • Christ's Humility. Philippians 2:5 Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; 8 and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; 10 that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and things under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  • Christ's Forgiveness. Jesus was tortured, insulted, and was crucified
  • Luke 23:34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."
  • Christ's Love. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • To those who have wronged us, express to them your humility and Gof will lift us up; forgive them and God will also forgive us; and love them and God will also show his love for us.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our own lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows
